The Story

Â

Felipa doesn’t feel capable of killing, it’s not in her nature; even though her sister, Roberta, feels the strange obligation and perverse desire to avenge their father’s murder. Once Roberta convinces Felipa, together they foray into the woods looking for moral redemption.

Â

Bestial is a brief, two movement narrative slice, a short-film that seeks to explore the clash between a misunderstood moral obligation that drives a pair of sisters to clumsily plan an act of revenge, and the irrational sexual desire that has its source in fear and a false sense of paternal and moral debt. Savage justice pitched against carnal instinct, both infected by fear.

Â

The Project

Â

This is a project thought up and molded by young filmmakers who seek to make their voice and vision present in the Mexican film industry. This industry is in constant need of renovation and fresh perspectives, so as to avoid pit falling into stale and repetitive narrative and/or visual patterns, which although not lacking in quality, they’re poised to eventually fail in the attempt to surprise and engage the public.

Â

Besides its narrative and conceptual values, the project seeks to round out its ideas through a coherent visual style. Carefully handpicked filming locations are enhanced by the meticulous cinematography; just as the eye for detail in production and costume design contributes to the creation of unsettling and sinister atmosphere. All of this is constantly working in favor of transmitting the young protagonists’ murky feelings.

Â

Behind the scenes, and beyond the artistic ambitions of the film, the project counts with the executive production and backing from Mónica Lozano Serrano, renowned and prolific Mexican producer of such films as Amores Perros and Tear This Heart Out; as well as advisory support from industry professionals such as producer Eamon O’Farril, and art director Eugenio Caballero, Academy Award winner for Pan’s Labyrinth.

The Funds

Â

The film has been shot and edited already, but there are still plenty of expenses to cover from the post-production and completion process; as well as the need to liquidate debt acquired during the filming stage, given that back then, all the elements seemed to align themselves in order for us to shoot when we did, despite not having the necessary funds to do so, we had to seize the opportunity that meant having the amazing team of collaborators as well as the filming locations available to us at the same window of time.
